Barbora Krejcikova Rewrote History at Wimbledon: She Never Conceded a Set to Jasmine Paolini in the Final

Barbora Krejčíková faced Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon final last Saturday and won the second Grand Slam title of her career by claiming victory with sets of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. The 28-year-old Czech tennis player, who achieved this great success after the 2021 French Open, competed as the number 31 seed at Wimbledon despite the injuries he suffered at the beginning of this season and won this tournament while having a record of 7-9. Krejčíková became the eighth woman to win Wimbledon in the last eight years, a feat achieved last year by another Czech player, unseeded Marketa Vondrousova.

Her Italian opponent, Paolini, ranked seventh, also achieved success at the French Open, reaching the final and becoming the first female tennis player to reach the final at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon since 2016.

Krejčíková won the $3.45 million prize with her Wimbledon victory

This was the highest payout reserved for women, on par with what men earned, and represented an 11.9% increase in the total prize pool compared to the previous year. Even players eliminated in the first round earned $76,636, which shows how competitive the competition is.

It is the seventh year in a row that a woman has won the title at Wimbledon, after Serena Williams won the titles in 2015 and 2016. Four American women advanced to the fourth round at the tournament this year, but only Emma Navarro advanced to the quarterfinals. Navarro achieved the feat by defeating No. 2 Coco Gauff, while Paolini reached the final by defeating No. 12 Madison Keys in the fourth round and No. 11 Danielle Collins in the semifinals.

Jessica Pegula said goodbye to the tournament early by being eliminated in the second round. As the Grand Slam calendar continues, the tennis players’ next big challenge will be the US Open, which kicks off in New York in late August. This tournament promises one of the highest prize money offered in tennis every year, and although this year’s budget has not yet been announced, a significant increase is expected.
