From now on, the Fed Cup will be held in the name of the world-famous American female tennis player Billie Jean King. In a statement, the organization said that the Fed Cup will henceforth be called the Billie Jean King Cup in order to honor the 76-year-old tennis player.

Stating that he was very happy because of the decision made, King said, “When I stepped out on the court for the first time at the Fed Cup in 1963, I enjoyed it very much. It was a privilege to compete for my country. The fact that the Fed Cup will now be held under the name of the Billie Jean King Cup made me experience the same feelings again.” he made his assessment.

King, who has 39 grand slam titles in her career, including 12 in singles, 16 in doubles, 11 in mixed doubles, is as one of the best female tennis players of all time.

The legendary athlete, the founder of the Women Tennis Players Association (WTA) and the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF), is known for her stance against gender discrimination. King, who achieved 7 Fed Cup titles in her career, made her name by winning the exhibition match with male tennis player Bobby Riggs in 1973 under the name “Battle of the Sexes”.
